Evaluating the precariousness of coral recovery when coral and macroalgae are alternative basins of attraction

چکیده
When coral and macroalgae are alternative attractors, the trajectory of benthic community following a major disturbance is shaped in part by whether herbivores keep suppressed, leaving reef surfaces state suitable for colonization. Because tend to colonize much faster than coral, an important issue how close ambient herbivory level where control lost, that is, precariousness coral-invasible relative switch-point macroalgae. In Moorea, French Polynesia, reefs dominated macroalga Turbinaria ornata remained so multiple population turnovers, whereas was removed simulated pulse free throughout 5-yr study. A field experiment revealed unable proliferate on disturbed until reduced more 50%. Low facilitated gradual transition because it allowed sufficient time repopulate. Accumulation 3.5 times greater undisturbed, Turbinaria-dominated reefs. Long-term persistence high abundances grazing prevent establishment macroalgae, reflected scarcity browsing consume mature By revealing processes foster bistability states, our work helps explain rich dynamical behavior exhibited communities Moorea elsewhere.

Inhibition of coral recruitment by macroalgae and cyanobacteria
Coral recruitment is a key process in the maintenance and recovery of coral reef ecosystems. While intense competition between coral and algae is often assumed on reefs that have undergone phase shifts from coral to algal dominance, data examining the competitive interactions involved, particularly during the larval and immediate post-settlement stage, are scarce. Using a series of field and ou...
متن کاملEstablishment of Coral–Algal Symbiosis Requires Attraction and Selection
Coral reef ecosystems are based on coral-zooxanthellae symbiosis. During the initiation of symbiosis, majority of corals acquire their own zooxanthellae (specifically from the dinoflagellate genus Symbiodinium) from surrounding environments. The mechanisms underlying the initial establishment of symbiosis have attracted much interest, and numerous field and laboratory experiments have been cond...
متن کاملAnnual coral bleaching and the long-term recovery capacity of coral.
Mass bleaching events are predicted to occur annually later this century. Nevertheless, it remains unknown whether corals will be able to recover between annual bleaching events. Using a combined tank and field experiment, we simulated annual bleaching by exposing three Caribbean coral species (Porites divaricata, Porites astreoides and Orbicella faveolata) to elevated temperatures for 2.5 week...
متن کاملDamselfish are coral fans.
Bustling around their reef homes, Red Sea dascyllus damselfish (Dascyllus marginatus) do quite well out of their co-habiting arrangement with hood coral (Stylophora pistillata). ‘The coral provide the fish with shelter from predators and a place for social interactions and egg laying’, says Nur Garcia-Herrera, from the Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Germany. Yet the agreement isn’t entirely one sided...

the major purpose of this study was to develop the translation teacher competency test (ttct) and examine its construct and predictive validity. the present study was conducted in two phases: a qualitative phase as well as a quantitative phase. in the first phase of the study, the author attempted to find out the major areas of competency required for an academic translation teacher. the second...
